HGSM Consulting Board
HGSM is honored by the individuals who serve on our Consulting Board. Each member is committed to responsible investing by a passionate interest and professional occupation. HGSM, and through HGSM, our investors and clients, benefit greatly by the experiences and judgment of this group.
The Consulting Board provides us with advice as to fund SRI/ESG integration policy as well as corporate engagement themes. Current members are:
Sr. Nora Nash
Nora Nash is a Sister of St. Francis of Philadelphia and is the Director of Corporate Social Responsibility for her congregation. She is a member of the Philadelphia Coalition for Responsible Investment as well as the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR). She currently manages the congregations’ assets in Community Development Loans, Social Justice Grants and is active in Shareholder Advocacy as a member of ICCR. She also presents sessions at Neumann College and Villanova University on various dimensions of justice and advocacy.
She was teacher and principal of Catholic Schools for many years and coordinated religious education classes in the Dioceses of Boston and Trenton. From 1993-2001 she was Novice Director for her congregation. Sr. Nora has served on numerous and varied committees and boards, such as Trenton Diocesan PTA Board Advisor, Trenton Diocesan Synod Committee, Middle States Accreditation Chair, St. Francis Hospital Board of Trustees, Coordinator of Heritage Communities’ activities, and Treasurer for the Eastern Franciscan Common Novitiate. Presently, she serves on the Members Board of Partners for the Common Good and the Consulting Board of the Good Steward Enhanced Fund.
She is a graduate of Neumann College, holds a Masters in Educational Administration from St. Bonaventure University and has completed post graduate work at Notre Dame University.

Susan Vickers, RSM
Vice President Community Health
Catholic Healthcare West
Sister Susan Vickers is the Vice President of Community Health for Catholic Healthcare West (CHW). She is responsible for directing and overseeing system-wide community benefit initiatives, corporate social responsibility and ecology programs. Susan took a leadership role in developing CHW’s system-wide commitment to improved environmental performance and in the decision-making process which led CHW to endorse the Ceres Principles for environmental protection and conservation.
In conjunction with her community health work, Susan directs CHW’s shareholder initiatives. She collaborates with other members of the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR) to raise social responsibility issues with the management of companies in CHW’s investment portfolio.
Susan currently serves as board member of Practice Greenhealth, Partners for the Common Good Loan Fund, Mercy Investment Program, Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility, St. Mary Medical Center Foundation Board and Mercy High School, Burlingame. She also serves on the Advisory Committee for the Good Steward Fund, the Catholic Health Initiatives SRI Advisory Committee, the CHRISTUS Health SRI Advisory Committee and the Global Health and Safety Initiative Advisory Committee.

Jesse J. Bean
Jesse J. Bean, prior to his retirement, was Vice President, Treasury Services for Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) from 1992 to 2007. CHW is a nonprofit multi-congregational health care system sponsored by seven women religious congregations headquartered in San Francisco, California. CHW, in 2007, operated 43 acute care facilities and nine medical groups of the CHW Medical Foundation throughout California, Arizona and Nevada with total assets in excess of $10 billion and net revenues of approximately $8 billion. The System is the largest healthcare provider in the state of California and ranks third in the nation among Catholic Healthcare systems based on total assets.
In his role as Treasurer, Jesse directed all treasury functions and was responsible for the strategy and management of the System’s $4.6 billion investment program; capital structure and accessing of capital through public and private markets (over $6.2B in career); all stake-holder relations; management of short-term cash and reserves; debt administration; and corporate leasing. From 1980 to 1992, Jesse served in a number of management positions including Corporate Treasurer and Director of Investor Relations for System Industries, Inc, a publicly held manufacturer of high performance storage subsystems and solutions for mainframe computers headquartered in Milpitas, California.
Jesse holds an A.B. from Occidental College and a M.B.A. from Saint Mary’s College. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities USA; Investment Committee of Catholic Health Initiatives; Advisory Board for the Adrian Dominican Sisters; Advisory Board for the Good Steward Fund: Investment Committee of Mercy Investment Services, Board of Trustees of the Religious Communities Investment Fund and various other investment and community based boards. He also continues to serve as chairperson of the American Hospital Associations “Treasurers Roundtable”.
Jesse and his wife Susan live in Pleasanton, California and have two adult daughters, Sarah and Samantha.

Brenda A. Schaefer

Brenda A. Schaefer was appointed to this position in July 2007, after joining SSMHC in August 2005. Prior to SSMHC, Ms. Schaefer was Manager, Settlement Operations, at MasterCard International, where she was responsible for global operations and settlement activity totaling $6-7 billion daily. Prior to MasterCard International, Ms. Schaefer was the Assistant Treasurer for XTRA Corporation, a truck trailer and marine container leasing company, where she managed the company’s global cash management program. Before joining XTRA Corporation in June 1999, she held Treasury management assignments of increasing responsibility in several organizations, including the Ralston Purina Company for ten years. Ms. Schaefer received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Webster University, Webster Groves, Missouri, and a Master’s degree in Management, also from Webster University. She is a Certified Treasury Professional and a member of the Association for Financial Professionals.

Paul M. Klinck

Mr. Klinck currently serves as Vice President, Treasury Services (since 1996) for Catholic Health East (CHE), a large, not for profit Catholic health system headquartered in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. As such, Mr. Klinck is responsible for development, implementation and management of CHE’s investment and cash management programs, which include cash, operating investments and the investment of pension assets. Prior to joining CHE, Mr. Klinck served as Director, Treasury Services for Catholic Health Corporation, Omaha, Nebraska (1993 to 1996) where he was responsible for both the central investment programs and central debt programs. Mr. Klinck began his career with Methodist Health Systems, Memphis, Tennessee, where he worked for 18 years in various treasury, accounting and finance positions, including Assistant Treasurer from 1990 to 1993. His oversight of the investments began in 1986. Mr. Klinck earned both a Masters and Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the University of Memphis. He serves as a member of the Consulting Board of The Good Steward Fund, the Finance and Investment Committees of The Interfaith Center for Corporate Responsibility, the Socially Responsible Investment Committee of the SRI Overseas Fund. L.P. and the Advisory Board of the Mellon First Principle Fund.

Mark A. Regier
Director of Stewardship Investing
Everence Financial
Mark A. Regier is director of stewardship investing for Everence Financial, a leading provider of faith-based financial products in the United States and a ministry of Mennonite Church USA. He oversees the company’s investment screening, proxy voting and corporate engagement activities and led the creation of the firm’s own community investing arm, Everence Community Investments.
Mark has served as governing board chair for the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility and founding chair for the International SRI Working Group (U.S. Social Investment Forum). He currently sits on the boards of the Isaiah Funds (disaster recovery investments), Partners for the Common Good (faith-based community investments), and the Good Steward Fund (leading ESG hedge fund). In 2006, Mark received the SRI Service Award, the U.S. social investment industry’s highest honor.
With 20 years of service to the church and a background in ethics and theological studies, Mark is often a resource to national and international organizations on faith-based and community investing issues.
